I have found through personal experience that the best way to remove carpet stains is to use a steam cleaner. These are usually available wherever you can buy a vacuum. The steam cleaner can also be rented from many grocery and hardware stores.


The trick is to use a good formula of carpet shampoo to begin with. If the stain is dried in and the shampoo is not resolving the issue, then you have to create a stronger solution. I use Oxy Clean laundry additive, which is in powder/granular form and dilute it in water. I then apply this directly to the stain and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, before going over it with the steam machine.


With an 11 year old boy, two dogs and two cats, I can guarantee that this is a tried and tested method that works in my household.
