How To Eliminate Smoke Odors from Carpets

by Suzie
(Upstate New York)

I rented an apartment for 1-1/2 years, and when we were moving out, the smell of cigarette smoke was staying behind! I applied nearly 1/2 box of baking soda, distributed liberally over the entire carpet. I let this set for 24 hours. To my surprise, the following day - no smoke odors! And, it was a beige carpet so it actually brightened up the carpet.

The trick is leaving it on the rug for as long as possible, as this gives the baking soda an opportunity to neutralize the odors. In fact, my sister, a nonsmoker with a keen sense of smell, came back with me the next day, and said, "I can't smell any cigarette smoke!"

I tried it, too! You're right! It really does do the trick. I think the main thing is that you not walk on the carpet after you put the baking soda around. I also think plain soda works better than the scented variety. Thanks again!
