Get Rid of Carpet Odor

by Christine
(USA)

When we purchased our first home there was a smell of dog urine in the basement. We just figured we would rent a steam vac and it would disappear, after all, the realtor said it would be fine. Well little did we know that the realtor could care less?

So after the steam vac project, the smell was even worse. So we needed something better. That is when I tried a little white vinegar. I mixed it with some water and soaked the areas that were the worst. Then I used a spray bottle to soak the rest. I let it dry and then vacuumed it up. After that I put baking soda down on the rug after it dried. The entire odor disappeared and was gone.

All you need is basic ingredients from your pantry. Don’t bother with expensive harsh cleansers. They can be toxic and baking soda and vinegar is much gentler.

Also a lot of cleaners can bleach carpeting and leave big spots where you applied it. This is important when you have little ones crawling and playing on the floor. This works great and I highly recommend it. We didn't have to replace the carpet and you can't smell the odor anymore!
