Finishing and refinishing your hardwood floor is not the easiest of tasks and for this reason, hiring a professional to do the job could cost quite the extra buck.

That’s why it’s becoming a trend to finish hardwood floor by yourself rather than enlisting the help of a pro. In this guide, we’ll teach you how to add that special shine to your house by applying hardwood floor finishing.

How to Finish Hardwood Floors – Tools and Accessories

Many of the tools and accessories that are required when finishing hardwood floors are not commonly used with other household practices, so there’s a good chance you won’t find them lying around the house. However, many of them can be found at tool and hardware shops, or even rented for a few days from a rental shop. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • a floor sander
  • a floor edger
  • sandpaper
  • a vacuum
  • dust protection (dust masks, dust goggles, etc)
  • large towels or cloths
  • brushes
  • floor wax (or floor finish solution)

Sanding Hardwood Floors

How to Finish Hardwood Floors – Preparation

Remember, the finishing procedure is bound to be quite messy so you’ll have to make sure the dust doesn’t spread out from the room you’re finishing in. Turn off air vents that might lead the dust to other parts of the house and suspend the wet towels or sheets around doors, in order to “catch” the roaming dust in the air and stop it from circulating around the house.

How to Finish Hardwood Floor – Step by Step Instructions

  1. Start from one corner of the room and run the sander over the floor in the direction that the wood’s grain is pointed at.

  2. Apply the next sandpaper on top.

  3. Repeat the process until you get the required tint and smoothness.

  4. Apply the flooring solution or wax with a brush and make sure the strokes are even and there are no lumps.

  5. Allow the solution to dry (it could take up to a few hours).
